How to get rid of a skunk

Skunks are quite common in some areas. Skunks, as we all know from those old Pepe Le Pew cartoons, secrete a nasty odor. Science tells us that the skunk uses that for protection. In any case, the skunk has anal scent glands that produce that funky skunk odor. “Anal” should pretty much give enough caution. But outdoor accidents do happen and just in case some skunk funk gets to you, here are some tips to get rid of it.

Tips - How to get rid of a skunk

# Covering compost heaps. Using modernized plastic compost bins that cover tightly can help avoid this skunk attractant from reeling them in. If a covered heap is not possible, make sure to keep fruit, animal bones and eggs out of the piles. Stick with plant material instead.

# Keeping fruit trees and berry shrubs harvested. Fallen fruits and berries can attract skunks. To make a yard less attractive, make sure to pick these up when they fall.

# Using different repellants, fences and other devices to keep skunks away.

Other ways - How to get rid of a skunk

# If you do not know where the skunks are living (they have a feeding range of about 2 miles in diameter), but you find them in your yard, chances are they are feasting on something. Garbage cans should be leashed to a wall and covered with a lid that is not easy to get off, while compost heaps should be transferred to into a proper container. This should get rid of skunks unless they\'ve found another food source.

# Live skunk traps are the best way to get rid of skunks. Havahart makes a good skunk trap. If you can not afford that much money, then your local Audubon society or university biology department may be able to fix you up with one of their skunk traps, Baits recommended: chicken entrails, fresh beetle larva, and peanut butter on bread crust. Once it is trapped, carefully approach the trap with a large sheet in front of you, laying the sheet over the top of the trap. Then it is up to you to relocate your little friend.

Home remedy for removing skunk odor from a dog:

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/3 cup baking soda
1 Tablespoon liquid dish soap

Mix ingredients together. The mixture will fizz and may explode if kept in a closed container, so use it up each time you mix it and don\'t try to save the rest. Use a sponge to apply the solution to your dog, kneading it into his coat; avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth as you sponge the face gently. Rinse thoroughly with lots of water. To be effective, this treatment must be applied within four hours after exposure to the skunk spray.
