Home Remedies for Sprain Natural and Herbal Trea Untitled Document

A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue around joints that connect one bone to another, and help to keep the bones together and stable.
In a sprain, one or more ligaments have been overstretched, twisted or torn. In a minor sprain, some of the fibers within the ligament are stretched. In more serious sprains, the ligament may be partially or completely torn.

Home Remedies for Sprain

Chop raw onions and put in a towel. Place this over the sprain to relieve pain and bring down the swelling. Alternatively, make a footbath of lavender oil and water and soak your ankle, but do not massage the area.

Use ice and elevate: most experts recommend immediate icing for sprains, followed by elevating the sprained joint above heart level. The cold deadens the pain and decreases blood flow, which lessens swelling. Keep the ice on for 15 to 20 minutes, then take it off for an equal amount of time, four or five times daily for at least two days. Be careful not to place an ice pack directly on your skin. Instead, wrap it in a towel.

Warm the outer leaves of a cabbage in hot water and bandage them around the sprain. This is one of the effective home remedies for sprain.

Five drops of thyme oil diluted either in bathwater or some other oil can be used as a compress to get rid of swelling.

The best treatment for a majority of sport related injuries are to apply ice. Ice should be applied for 15 - 20 minutes every two for a new injury, along with a gentle compression wrap and elevation. Do not sleep with wrap on at night.

Some sprain sufferers find that applications of medicated sports creams can help with the pain and swelling. Some products are formulated to provide heat through a chemical reaction with the skin. Strong over-the-counter pain relievers can also help reduce muscle soreness.

Soak outer leaves of cabbage in hot water and wrap around the area with sprain and leave it for 10-15 minutes. This is also one of the good home remedies for sprains.

Apply the paste made from lime leaves and butter on the affected area.

The dried flower heads of the Arnica plant contain chemical compounds that help heal sprains and relieve muscle pain. You could look for Arnica tincture, cream or ointment in health food stores. Apply directly to the injured area.

Massaging the affected area with comfrey oil or cream can help in alleviating the pain. This is one of the popular sprain home remedies.

Horse chestnut is also very useful for such injuries. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties and presence of a compound called aescin it becomes beneficial for all kinds of injuries. You can spread this gel on the affected area every two hours till the pain subsides.

A stretch or tear in the ligament that connects two or more bones forming a joint results in the common “Ouch” condition Sprain. Fortunately there are very effective home remedies for sprain that has been used time immemorial.

If you repeatedly sprain your ankles, here\'s a way to avoid it in the future: Wear the shoes specifically designed for your activity. They provide the support, traction and cushioning needed, which can greatly reduce your risk of reinjury.

Sit on the floor. Stretch your leg out straight. Loop a band around the foot. Slowly point the toes and ankle away from you. Hold for 2 seconds. Return to starting position. Repeat 10 times.
