Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or waking in the middle of the night and staying awake, if this problem continues for more then a month is called chronic insomnia. Most of the cases of insomnia are related to normal day to day worries and tension or simply to caffeine consumption and is not a serious condition but it can be very frustrating, and can cause lack of attention and bad temper.

Milk is very valuable in insomnia. A glass of milk, sweetened with honey, should be taken every night before going to bed in treating this condition. It acts as a tonic and a tranquilliser. Massaging the milk over the soles of the feet has also been found effective.
A warm bath with lavender oil, a pillow sprinkled with lavender oil, or a lavender sachet stuck in your pillow will help you to relax and feel sleepy.
Fill up your pillow cover with: peppermint, rosemary, rose leaves, levender and Lemon verbena. Sleep throughout the night.
Regular, active exercises during the day and mild exercise at bedtime enhances the quantity and quality of sleep as the exercise stimulate the elimination of lactic acid from the body. This is one of the effective home remedies for insomnia.
Stir 1 teaspoon of lavender leaves to a cup of boiling water, cool and drink 3 times daily.
Take some juice of the leaves of the Indian sorrel along with its oil, in equal contents and store this in a bottle. Now, massage this oil into the scalp every night before retiring to bed. Various yogaasanas are effective in the treatment of insomnia and they are shirasana, sarvangasana, paschimottanasana, uttanasan, viparitakarni and shavasana.
Avoid heavy meals- At least there must be a gap of three hours between your heavy meal (if cannot be avoided) and going to bed. And also a walk after dinner will help the food to get digested.
The herb rauwolfia is a valuable medicine for insomnia because of its indisputable efficacy as a sedative. The hypnotic action of the drug appears to have been known since ancient times. The very first dose of rauwolfia will enable a patient with a phlegmatic and gouty nature to go to sleep. The powder of the root in a quantity of 0.25 gm to 0.5 gm should be mixed with some scented substance like cardamom and given to the patient The patient will have a sound sleep during the entire night. If the disease is chronic, the patient should take O.25 gm twice a day, in the morning as well as at night before retiring. These are the best home remedies for Insomnia.
