One of the most popular home remedies for hiccups involves breathing into a brown paper bag. The original belief was that by breathing into a small bag sealed around the mouth, the concentrated carbon dioxide would somehow calm the twitching diaphragm. Others believed that the calming effect of controlled breathing would relax the diaphragm and end the hiccups.

Ice. Drink a glass of ice water -- a cold drink is believed to shock the system. Or simply apply a piece of ice to the back of the neck. This may shock your body and cause you to take a deep breath.

Sugar. Experts give a thumbs-up to this remedy. Simply place a spoonful of sugar in your mouth, toward the back of the tongue where sour tastes are tasted. This will enhance the sweet overload you\'re delivering.

Make a mixture by adding 2 tsp of common salt in a cup of plain yogurt and eat it slowly.

Mix 1/2 tsp mustard seeds with 1/2 tsp of pure ghee and swallow this mixture. It will stop hiccups quickly. This hiccups remedy is one of the effective home remedies for hiccups.

You can take a mixture of lemon juice, a pinch of salt, few leaves of mint and lukewarm water. Take this in a dosage of a glassful. This will eliminate the gastric irritation and will also help in reducing the episodes of hiccups.

Blowing a balloon, drinking water with your head bent and by sipping from a glass full of water, breathing in through the nose and breathing out through the mouth concentrating on the breathing process, a sudden distraction or a sudden unexpected question can immediately stop hiccups. Dill seed. Swallowing a teaspoon of dill seeds is an old folk remedy that may work for you. No one is sure if it\'s an ingredient in the dill seeds that helps or if simply swallowing the seeds is what does the trick.

Chamomile  Put 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in a brown paper bag; hold bag over nose and mouth; breathe in and out slowly and deeply through the nose.

Camphor  Mix three drops of spirits of Camphor in half a glassful of water and drink.

Tickle it away. Tickling the soft palate of the roof of your mouth with a cotton swab may do the trick. Or, if you\'re the type who enjoys getting tickled, have someone find your ticklish spots.

If we have hiccups while eating, just hold our breath for as long as possible and swallow at the time we feel the hiccup sensation coming. Do that two or three times, then take a deep breath and repeat again. These are the effective home remedies for hiccups.
