Fast Facts for Visiting Syria
Syria is one of those places that you are hearing more and more about as people are having great experiences and travels while visiting the country. Syria used to encompass much of the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan.
The name Syria is believed to come from Greek or Roman times when the present territories of Syria were called the Provincia Syria. The history of Syria leads us to the Stone Age and such civilisations as Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, Islamic dynasties, Crusaders and Ottoman Turks, even French and British left trace in the Syrian history.
Currency: The official currency is the Syrian pound (SYP), which is divided into 100 piastres. There are a few ATMs in the bigger towns, but not all cards are accepted. Credit cards are not widely used, but American Express and Diners Club are the most readily accepted.
