Although the common cold affects all parts of the body, it usually begins in the nose and throat. Colds are so common that we do not care for it but they can be serious. Most colds are due to virus infections of one type or another. Unfortunately, none of these viruses are susceptible to our present antibiotic medicines. Adenoviruses produce the more serious type of colds, and they are often followed by tonsillitis and sore throat even virus pneumonia, particularly in children. Sometimes the membranes of the eyes are also involved.

Stay away from the following food items: If your child is frequently down due to common cold and cough it is best you avoid the following mentioned items. Banana and milk are a strict no. I totally understand that if children are asked to stay away from milk it worries parents to no extent. I would suggest parents put their children on Soy Milk; doing so, you would be giving your child the best of both worlds. Give grapes only in the month of February and March. Reduce the intake of tomatoes, black eyed beans, peanuts, any items made from chic pea flour. Another important take away for all parents is to remember “No Water for 20 minutes after consuming any fruit”.

Zinc lozenges are another well-know cold symptom reliever. Sold in nearly every drugstore, studies show that use of zinc lozenges over a period of two or three days at the beginning of a cold appear to shorten its duration. Researchers don’t know exactly why zinc works but seem convinced that work it does! Scientists caution though that zinc can lead to the depletion of copper in the body it used long-term and suggest limiting use to a few days to avoid this.

Steaming with essentials: If you have a steamer, it usually has a little trough or opening where the steam comes out. At the trough, you can put some essential oils such as eucalyptus; lemon (see above); lavender; peppermint; and geranium to be dispensed in the steam. Eucalyptus helps asthma, bronchitis, flu and sinusitis, and it breaks up mucus. Peppermint dilates the bronchioles and is an expectorant. Lavender also helps with asthma; bronchitis; catarrh; influenza; whooping cough; sinusitis; and throat infections. Geranium helps with tonsillitis and sore throats.
